Rainy days and Mondays...

Are one in the same today!

Met up with Mom in Culpeper to do some grocery shopping and to borrow her 18 volt drill. Since she was getting 'interesting' visitors in the afternoon, I decided to go to her house. We had a yummy lunch and then the visitors arrived.

The visitors? A small pit bull and her four puppies. They had been rescued from a local shelter where the conditions are horrible. Half of the pups have already died and the rest were going to be put to sleep. The momma dog seems nice and the pups are adorable. Mom will be their foster home until they can get real homes.

Treadmill = zero (I am slacking big time)

And now for today's home improvement segment:

With Mom's 18 volt drill, I was all ready to work on the deadbolts. I reset the template on the door, got all the tools nearby and starting drilling. The main hole took much longer to drill than I had anticipated, but I remember the advice that come from Wink at Lowe's - drill slowly. Finally, I had a hole all the way through my door. Yay! I just drilled through my house.

After removing the wooden plug of door from the drill saw, I tried removing the mandrel from the saw so that I could attach the smaller saw. After trying several wrenches, sockets and a jar opener, I could not get the bloody thing off. Finally I resorted to calling a handy EQ friend from Texas (thanks Dan!) who gave me some great pointers on thread direction and leverage. Really it was just better to have someone rooting for me as I worked to get the darned thing off. A deep socket, a long screwdriver and all my might did the trick in the end.

Okay. Great. So now I am ready to drill the second hole in the door. All I have to do is put the smaller drill saw on the mandrel and away I go. Much to my surprise and even though the two saws were part of the same installation kit, the mandrel does not fit into the smaller saw.

As my sister would say, "It should be easy. It's never easy."
