A time out sort of day
September 26th, 2006 06:49 amBrian & I went to his buddy Dick's house for some fishing. Dick lives in a small mountain community with his wife & their property borders 2 small ponds that offer some nice fishing.
The stress & craziness of the ninja mission that we are working on is starting take a bit of a toll. Me, being the Type A that I am, has a mind that races at approximately 413 miles per hour no matter what. Brian, being a dedicated Type B, hates this. We're trying to keep things on an even keel & I think a day of fishing is a good way to do it.
After a cookout of hot dogs, kielbasa & hamburgers with all the fixings, we headed to the lake. This coincided with it starting to rain. Brian & Dick being the serious fisherman that they are, didn't miss a beat & a raincoat was quickly found for yours truly.
Brian & I headed out in a small pontoon boat with a trolling motor while Dick was in a canoe. Fortunately the rain stopped at about the same time that we settled in to cast our lines. We fished for a good bit but it did not seem that the fish were biting. Brian caught a bluegill & Dick caught a few but that was it.
Brian suggested that we try our luck at the lower pond which is a bit bigger. We took the canoe & headed down to the pond while Dick trailered & drive the pontoon boat around to a place where it could be launched. Brian & I hopped in the canoe & he paddled us over to meet Dick on the opposite shore. I've not been in a canoe in a few years, but once I settled down it was OK.
Just as Dick came to meet us, it started POURING! We huddled under some trees for cover & waited the heavy rain out. Once it lightened up a bit, we headed back to the water. I had some reservations about getting soaked, but once again, the rain did not last long & we set about to fishing once more.
Brian caught several small-mouthed bass with really gulping down his bait. I hope the little guy will be OK. (We catch & release everything ... well, Brian & Dick do, it's not like I caught any fish.) I had a few hits on my lures, but that was about it. I did hook a tree once, but they don't count.
The real highlight of the day for me came when we heard a BIG splash in the middle of the pond. We all turned to see an Osprey who had swooped down in an effort to catch a fish. He came up empty this time, but Dick saw that he caught one on the second try in the other pond.
