This evening we had Tucker's tree planted - it's an Autumn Blaze Maple. Even though we're under a tornado watch, the rain stopped when the nursery truck came and it stayed dry with blue sky until the planting was over. Tucker's ashes and collar were placed in the hole with his tree. And once the earth was moved back in place, the rain came back for a brief bit.

And then was a rainbow.

Happy birthday to our Brodie who turns 1 year old today! He shares the date with a few friends and the country.

After several really hot and oppressive days, it's cool and comfortable here with blue skies. We have the windows open. It's a rare weekend where we do not have *anything* planned (other than sleeping in and relaxing) and it feels great!

Loveseat for the living living room has been selected! Now we wait for delivery.

In other news, there is some 'happy day' thing going on today for fathers. While I had a father in the biological sense, he was never much of a presence or influence in my life. To that end, I celebrate my mother, [livejournal.com profile] njzoomom, who did all the parenting and was a pretty good influence on her two daughters.

To those *real* dads out there out there (and if you're a friend of mine, you're probably a *real* dad - I hope you had a grand day!

And because Duchess and Brodie don't have LiveJournal accounts, [livejournal.com profile] daecabhir makes a darned good dog daddy.

Dear large black snake in the garage: I am petrified of you. Really.

Dear toad who chased me while I was trying to non-nonchalantly get away from the snake: Not funny.

All that screaming? That was because of you two.

15 minutes later and my heart is beating mostly normal again. Brodie got very alarmed when he heard my screams and started barking. Both dogs had to make sure that I was okay when I came back into the house.

[livejournal.com profile] daecabhir will have to check for the mail when he gets home because I am not going outside again today.

*sigh*

Came home from a day of errands to find that Brodie had been stung in the face. There's a fair amount of swelling around his muzzle and under his collar, but he's able to breathe just fine. Benadryl has been administered. He looks so pathetic.

How in the heck are we an entire into the month of March already? It was just February.

While we lost a day due to snow, the remodeling project is going well. The only trace of the wall that was removed is the flooring which has yet to be repaired. Our master bathroom painting is done. The only real headache there was realizing that the wall color that we chose was not quite right and so there was an unexpected run to the hardware store for new paint. Okay, maybe there was more than just one headache because Dan (who is THE paint guy at True Value) couldn't get the  color to mix properly - and this was a True Value color. He was, however, able to create a color somewhere between 'Fuzzy Sweater' and 'Old Mauve' that was just right. Really. the guy who makes up paint names must be smoking something pretty good. Minus the trim, our hallway and basement stairwell are painted and we are in with love the colors. The living room needs another coat, but should be done on Monday.

[livejournal.com profile] daecabhir and I will need to make a final decision (and purchase) for floor tile for the hall bathroom and then I think (hope) that we will done with the big stuff for a while.

The whirlwind of crazy continues to circle this week ... yesterday [livejournal.com profile] dreamtigress's dog, Corva, took a tumble down the stairs and we learned that my Auntie Anne is in the hospital after heart surgery. Brodie ate the handle off one of the guy's tools, I had my yearly physical, after having no luck restoring my blown up website, I am starting over with a clean WordPress install. the kiln was fired twice this week (really, chambray, please behave predictably), and lots of other minor things that pop up and pile up to make life interesting.

My LJ updating skills have apparently gotten very rusty and I am spraying myself with virtual WD-40 to bap a post on my keyboard.

What's been going on with...

Country home - The contractors started today on our latest home remodeling project. The wall between the dining room and the living room is GONE. The space is so much more open in all of the ways and I can't wait for [livejournal.com profile] daecabhir to see it (he's not home yet). Tomorrow, there be painting in the master bathroom, more spackling, and definitely more prep for the rest of the painting.

Pottery - While I have not had much time in the studio in the last few weeks, I have a kiln full of bisqueware that needs to be glazed. This Saturday, I will be once again participating in the Downtown Culpeper Carnival. This time though, I will be in a store that sells bread, meat, and goodies, and will be demonstrating hand-building (carving?) of my Celtic finger labyrinths.

Pets - Brodie continues to be a smart little lad. We're working on 'stay', 'wait', and 'paw' with him currently. Duchess and he play a lot which is so nice to see.

Knitting - With everything else that has been going there has been very little time for knitting. I managed to do one charity hat during the Ravellenic games.

Motorcycle - There has been no word on a possible buyer for my GoldWing since Thanksgiving. I am hoping big time that a someone comes along this spring.

Once again, I am nabbing a FB post from [livejournal.com profile] daecabhir to tell you about our weekend.

Home again, home again, jiggety-jog. Not the most "productive" weekend on record, but our time was well spent in good company.

Today we journeyed to Manassas, where we spent a relaxing afternoon with Elizabeth Mycko, Henry Mycko, and their charming, very well behaved, Alex, at Monza. T'was good just to sit and talk about anything, without any particular goal, other than just enjoying the company.

On the way out there was a visit to The Opera House Gourmet, where chocolate, wine and pretties were procured. We said good-bye as the snow wafted gently down, and Anna and I proceeded to take advantage of being up in that neck of the woods.

There was McKays Used Books, where we traded in some books and DVDs, and took home some books, CDs and a DVD. Then to Sears, where we had possibly the most crass / offensive salesperson either of us have ever met - if he'd actually been trying to sell us something (we were on a "hit and run" mission), things might have ended badly. From there we went to Best Buy, where we also encountered customer service #fail (do not make a half-assed attempt at helping us, and then get pissy when you get called on it), whilst trying to find out if they had the LG G3 Pad in stock.

Dinner was at Pho Linh in Gainesville, yummy as always.

And now we are home, with puppies gnawing on each other in the background, because that's what they do.

When the dogs have some sort of wound of issue, we have said (in our best dog voice), "I have a boo boo paw, you know".  This is almost always for Duchess since she is in the one who gets into the most trouble.

After picking Brodie up form getting neutered, [livejournal.com profile] daecabhir said (in his best dog voice), "I have a boo boo ball sack, you know".

Our lives are different ... for which I am so very grateful.

Oy!

This was going to be a post where I praised Brodie on how well he has been doing. No accidents in the house, letting us know when he needs to go out, actually going off the deck readily to do his business, and today's bit of wonder, I left the basement door open every time I went down to the studio and he didn't come down the stairs. Each time I came up to check on him, things were just fine. I was so proud of our little man.

That is until I came upstairs around 6 pm because of a phone call and saw - much to my complete and utter disbelief - that he had chewed on the window frame in the office.

At first I was bewildered because there this orange stuff on the window and was wondering how orange stuff could have gotten on the window frame. All this pondering was going on as I was walking to my desk and talking on the phone. As I got closer to my desk, I came to the realization that there was no mysterious orange stuff on the window frame - the orange 'stuff' was wet wood.

Of course, I had to wait until I was off the phone to inform Mr. Brodie that chewing on the country home was a bad thing. A very bad thing indeed.

In other news, a glaze firing has been kicked off tonight.

It's get challenging coming up with witty subject lines all the time.

Duchess' eyes are doing much better with the antibiotic ointment. She hates it when I put it in, but it's a necessary evil. I reminded her that I have to put eye drops in my own eyes all of the time. She was not impressed. Brodie is full of energy and is a delight to have in the house. We're still accident free and today we worked on playing fetch, a lesson on not stealing socks from the laundry basket, and staying upstairs when the basement door is open. Of course, we still miss our Tucker very much. In the spring, we plan on planting something special - maybe a tree - and burying his ashes with it.

Today was another lazy-ish day in a string of lazy days. [livejournal.com profile] daecabhir is still trying to get the crud completely out of his system and it's all too easy for me to take a nap in the late morning. And naps are much better when we get to take one together.  We did manage to get a few things done over the weekend ... a bit of cleaning, old papers purged from the file cabinet, a bit of dusting in the dining room, laundry, sewing, and knitting. Well, okay, I did those last two, but my honey is nice enough to let me sew and knit when he cooks.

My current knitting project is a late xmas present for a friend in NJ. I started last month, but have had to frog it twice. It'll go out sometime this week. Also in the 'better-late-than-never' category, this evening I remembered that we never sent Aunt Terry her present ... even though we bought it last January! Work also happened on one of my IOU sewing projects from the holidays.

The bills have started to hit our insurance from my hospital stay. It looks like the lab bills will be a story since they are billed differently from the hospital and it looks like everything little thing is billed separately. ER doctor, hospital doctor visits, you name it. Ugh.

It's turned pretty darned cold here in Virginia. Yes, I know that it's winter and all but we don't usually see the really low digits. Well, all that is going to change very soon. Monday night is forecasted to be THREE DEGREES. That's really cold. The high for Tuesday? Eighteen. Compared to three, yes, that's 'warmer' but I am not ready for it to be that cold outside!

The bowls that I threw the other day cleaned up pretty nicely. Since I have a sore spot on my thumb, I can't throw until it heals, so I made a couple of yarn bowls on Thursday. Maybe I should get my act together and glaze pots so that I can run the kiln overnight. The only wildcard will be if the weather plays havoc with the electricity. That would be havoc indeed since we don't have much wood for the stove.

Today was a double doctor day - [livejournal.com profile] daecabhir went to see the doctor because the crud his his dealing with is lingering in his system and Duchess went to the vet because she a viral conjunctivitis that popped up yesterday. Brodie came along with us to see Dr. Rushing and the entire staff thought he was a cutie pie. Brodie weighed in at 35 pounds and was proclaimed worm-free. Duchess weighed in at 67 pounds and came home with eye ointment.

Brodie is doing very well and continues to amaze us with his fast learning. We've not had an accident in the house for at least three days, he's getting better at letting us know when he has to go out, he's learning to wait before bolting out of his crate, etc. He and Duchess play well both inside and out. Not sure if I have said it here already or not, but 'Karma' must be Brodie's middle name because Duchess is certainly getting what she so richly deserves in a little brother.

Happy New Year!

Things seem to be moving in slow motion and hyperspeed all at the same time since I got sick.

Brodie is doing well with learning things like 'sit', 'wait', 'go', etc. and his name since it's a new one for him. Duchess has finally warmed up to him and the two of them now play. Brodie's middle name must be 'karma' because Duchess is certainly reaping what she has sowed for the past 4 years by being a nudgie little sister. Brodie, on the other hand, seems to enjoy gnawing at Duchess' legs and is catching on quickly by play-fighting with her since she knows all the tricks.

Yesterday found me in the studio for the first time in a month and it felt very nice. To get back into the swing of throwing, I decided to try out the Wiziwig tool that [livejournal.com profile] daecabhir got me for my birthday. Turns out the 'Bowl Makin' Bob' is a pretty nifty rib and there are now some bowls drying on the shelf. It will be exciting to see how these turn out.

Speaking of my sweet [livejournal.com profile] daecabhir, he is still feeling under the weather. The stomach funk that he had over xmas is gone but a cold has taken its place. [livejournal.com profile] njzoomom thinks that he may have gotten jealous since everyone got sick this holiday season.

Our big New Year's Eve was watching Ferris Bueller (which a certain husband of mine had never seen before) and smooching at midnight. We're pretty exciting around here, but don't be jealous!
pandasheart: Panda's Heart (huh?)
It's hard to believe that the year is almost over! Recently someone asked about free weekends for [livejournal.com profile] daecabhir and I and after I got done laughing, I stopped to do a little figuring ... we spent 15 weekends at ren faires, two weekends in PA for pottery purposes, and another several at craft shows. Those are all weeks that my amazing husband worked 7 days straight. Life is crazy busy and while it is the life we have chosen for now, I can only hope that folks understand when we don't have much time to spare.

Speaking of pottery, I have not spent any time in my studio in a month now which is bad, bad, bad. While my business did appreciately better in 2013 than 2012, I need to work harder at getting my arse in the studio and getting my product online. Not trying to beat myself up, just trying to keep myself motivated.

Brodie continues to impress us with his quick learning. At dinner time, he got into his crate without being led; he's much better about scratching at the crate door and he is also learning not to bolt out of the crate when the doors opens. We're still having a few pee accidents in the house but we'll take that as a win. He seems to be pretty comfortable in the house and Duchess is starting to play with him a little. We're trying hard to keep her from getting jealous since Bodie is getting a lot of attention (and three meals a day).

[livejournal.com profile] daecabhir is getting over his stomach bug and I seem to be over the ill effects from the food poisoning. The hospital bills have yet to hit but I am sure they will be impressive when they do. Hopefully our insurance will cover the large majority. One things is for certain in the coming year, there will be no eating at Wendy's from this family.

With August in town to pick up [livejournal.com profile] dreamtigress, we had another holiday dinner that couldn't be beat. This time around we had a fresh ham in the rotisserie as well as all the goodies from the first first. [livejournal.com profile] 1painter42 was able to join us again and we introduced her to Cards Against Humanity - and she won! I managed to get in a little knitting while the gang played another game featuring pink bamboo and pandas ([livejournal.com profile] daecabhir won that one).

The big news is that the puppy-with-no-name finally got his name! Our new furry child has been dubbed Brodie. As it turns out, Brodie is a Gaelic name and our little boy has his own tartan. He's making good progress with training in general but we still have a few accidents in the house now and again (only pee though).
pandasheart: I am pony! Hear me roar! (rapidash)
[livejournal.com profile] daecabhir and I traveled to Maryland today to celebrate xmas with his family; we also brought the puppy-yet-to-be-named with us. Although he made it through the night without an accident (many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] njzoomom for bringing us a smaller crate) we thought it would be safer to keep him under a close eye.

It was so nice to spend some time with the Messick and Nguyen clan. We only get to see them a few times a year so it's always nice to catch up and enjoy the kids.

The puppy-yet-to-be-named did very well on the car ride - the only incident was him puking as we turned into the driveway when we got there. He was a very well-behaved boy the entire time, spending about a good portion of his time our of the crate (but on a leash).
pandasheart: (celt flame pony)
Today we were joined by [livejournal.com profile] njzoomom, [livejournal.com profile] dreamtigress, [livejournal.com profile] 1painter42, and Wilma for a holiday meal and gift exchange. We enjoyed prime rib ([livejournal.com profile] daecabhir dined on a Quorn roast), feta-pasta salad, broccoli-potato-cheese casserole, sage bread baked by [livejournal.com profile] 1painter42, baked brie, cheesecake and other assorted yummies things. Lots of fantastic presents were exchanged and much fun was had.

The yet-to-be-named puppy is down to just a few accidents in the house per day. During present time he curled up at my feet, wedged in between a pile of gifts and the couch. Duchess tolerates him mostly, but sometimes they cuddle up together. Auntie Justine has taught the pup all about ice cubes and he adores them.
pandasheart: Panda's Heart (huh?)
The puppy-yet-to-be-named pees so much, I swear he urinates twice his bodyweight every day. He's pretty much peed everywhere he's been, and has pooped twice in the house as well.

We may have bitten off more than we can chew.

After spending the night at the Renniesylum for the annual Holidaze Party, we got on the road to Baltimore so that we could pick up [livejournal.com profile] dreamtigress (and Corva dog) and deliver them to [livejournal.com profile] njzoomom's house. From there, the plan was to meet the puppy that we found on Craigslist.

Not long after we had dropped our sisterly cargo off and were enroute for the puppy meeting, we received a phone call from a Tiger in distress. [livejournal.com profile] dreamtigress had fallen and was in a lot pain - her elbow might be dislocated or broken. After making sure she and Mom could get to the ER or urgent care, we continued on to the canine meet-up.

The five-month old puppy was much smaller than we expected but just as cute as his picture. Duchess didn't seem interested him at all but at least she did not show any aggression. The pup seemed happy and fairly well-adjusted, although we were dismayed to learn that he had worms - something not previously disclosed. [livejournal.com profile] daecabhir and I hashed it out privately and when we returned, the puppy came right to me and leaned into me.

And so we went home with two dogs.

We stopped by the urgent care in Culpeper to find [livejournal.com profile] dreamtigress and [livejournal.com profile] njzoomom getting ready for check out. The x-ray was up in the lightbox and I could see the break in my sister's elbow quite clearly. I give her credit, she rarely does anything half-way.
pandasheart: Dragonfly (dragonfly)
The night that I came home from the hospital, a friend asked if we were ready for another dog. He knew it was soon, but he knew of a pit bull who needed a home. In the end, the foster home decided to keep the dog, but it made [livejournal.com profile] daecabhir and I have the very difficult discussion of whether or not to get another dog. Duchess seemed very lost without Tucker and while no dog could replace our gentle giant, it didn't seem fair to make Duchess be lonely.

After cruising Craigslist for a bit, we found a dog that interests us and we're hoping to meet him soon to see if he and Duchess might be friends.
