Apparently I was very congested and never knew it because I am now coughing like there is no tomorrow. Plus there is the Tsunami of Snot [TM] that has appeared from nowhere as well.

Brian made a trip to the abandoned tomato garden yesterday and brought back some more tomatoes, a few butternut squash, some peppers and one very sad looking cantaloupe. He also said he picked some corn, but I have yet to see it, which means it probably got left in his his truck. He said folks are starting to run over the garden with ATVs and such so this is most likely the last of it.

Seems 2009 has been some sort of bumper crop year for daddy long leg spiders. They are everywhere I turn! Yeah, yeah, I know they eat bugs and all, I am just getting tired of having them be at every spot I look.

Time to schlep off to town for some supplies. Town in this case most likely means Culpeper, Mom. LOL

After a visit to the garden plot yesterday, I have more tomatoes! The garden is winding down though and I had just enough for a crock pot of stewed tomatoes and a few left over in hopes that they ripen on the window sill.

Still no leads on the stray Pit Bull's owner. Yesterday I took a chance and let she and Tucker loose for a romp since I know they both had a lot of pent up energy. She listens very well and kept me in eye sight. She is also a super speed demon! While she doesn't get why throwing sticks, tennis balls or the Frisbee is for fun Tucker, she finally decided to try chase him around a bit. What fun to watch!

Speaking of leads ... no news on the job front either. I was really hoping to hear something from Orange County about the Tourism Director position.

The Wing and Endeavor both got bathed and are much happier now.

I guess Brian is no longer considering trying to adopt Kane (the American Bull Dog) he has not mentioned her in days. I hope she gets a good home.

Another Sunday morning trip to the garden plot with grocery shopping & furniture buying thrown in for good measure.

Aldi's has a special buy this week on some Mission (type) living room furniture that looked decent for the price. 2 of the 3 pieces are ones we need (TV & end tables) with some pretty good pricing.

Somehow I managed to get the ex to come along with me & after scoping out the furniture, we decided to go ahead & buy one end table & the TV stand.

As a side note, I've given up on getting fruit from Aldi ... seems we end up with fruit flies every time.

Next stop was Wal-Mart (bleh) for some grocery shopping. While I am not a fan of Wal-Mart by any means, there are some things that are just cheaper there or can't get elsewhere. Big jars of Skippy Natural Peanut Butter is one such item & at the alarming rate of which the ex goes through the stuff, it's the only way to keep the pantry stocked.

Grocery shopping with the ex is very much like what I imagine it must be like to shop with a small child. Why are you buying that? Can I get this? How did this get in the cart? No, honey, we buy this brand of ; etc. LOL

Even though a shopping trip always costs more when he comes with me, I am really glad that the ex accompanied me today.

Last stop was at the garden plot. Since we had groceries in the Endeavor, I stayed in the AC while the ex went harvesting. He came back with two watermelons & a very heavy bucket of tomatoes & carrots. The ex's carrots have done really well & it was fun to see how proud he was of them.

Not surprisingly, we had tomato sammiches for lunch & cooked carrots with our dinner. (The ex made the yummiest sauteed carrots!)

Sadly the watermelon we cut into was not yet ripe (it had to be picked through as the vine was dying & one end was mushy). Maybe the other one will be better.

Yum

Went to the garden plot this morning in hopes of beating the heat. It beat me. LOL

Mom met me there & there were lots of vegees ready for the picking. We both came home with onions, tomatoes, & a few sad-looking cantaloupes. The rutabagas are all done, I brought home the last 3 as well as one green pepper. Brian has two watermelons still on the vine; they are so cute. I hope they are yummy. The carrots are looking good & there are a lot of green tomatoes on the plants yet.

I have been kinda grouchy for the past couple of days & I am not sure why. Hope I have not grumbled at YOU!

Missed out on the free Slurpee yesterday (7-11) because I completely forgot about it when we went out.

Brian & I went to the garden today. It seems that Brian missed a few squash & cucumbers when he was there last. We have some ENORMOUS cucumbers. I have no idea of what to do them. Seriously - there are at least 3 that are about 18 inches! OK ... get that thought our of your head!

I plan on making stuffed squash with at least one of the big yellow squashes for dinner tomorrow night. We have some let over Italian sausages that Brian grilled the other night & I will use them for the meat in the squash stuffing.

We also picked one pepper from the first plant we put in. We have more rutabaga that are probably ready but I still have one from the last time we went. They turned out to be very bitter. Brian also has a baby watermelon on the vine! It is so cute!

Brian & I rode over to check on the garden early to take advantage of the cooler temperatures. While two weeks was a little bit long to go for the weeds, the plants really took off!
  • The tomato plants are flowering & the first plant we put in has green tomatoes.
  • The yellow squash is going OK, the plants that were underwater earlier in the spring are somewhat stunted, but the ones on higher ground look great with lots of flowers. At first all I saw was a tiny squash, but lo & behold, I found a beauty of about 8 inches under one of the huge leaves.
  • The onions looked good too, again with the underwater guys a bit behind. Brian said they are ready to start picking & we choose 4 to come home with us.
  • While weeding, Brian thinned out his carrots & pulled a few that were about 2 inches long. He ate one of them too!
  • The big surprise for me was the rutabaga ... 3 of them were ready to be picked already!
  • Small peppers are emerging as well.

After weeding, we planted two more pepper plants & a sad little cucumber plant that had been donated to the garden by a local Boy Scout troop.

Brian is all jazzed to plant a garden at the house next years; I said lets take it one garden at a time.

Much to my surprise, it is raining AGAIN. Rain has become our new default weather here in VA. I poked my head out to watch it rain for a bit but found things to be rather steamy so I did not stay long.

Working on my resume has been my chore for much of yesterday & this morning. Any of you masochists out there that want to take a peek & give me some feedback, just let me know & I'll email a copy to you.

Since I never got around to doing to any of the fill-in posts, here's a few up-datey things...

While Brian's doctor can't seem to tell him that he's a diabetic, the pharmacist at Wahlgreens had no qualms about spelling things out clearly for us. Brian has been put on medicine to treat diabetes therefore he IS a diabetic. Hopefully this is the wake-up call Brian needs to start taking care of himself. Tony the Wahlgreens pharmacist is my new hero. He's not bad looking either. LOL

Our plot & a half at the Culpeper Community Garden will remains ours. I went out last Sunday to do some weeding & what-not. I also planted 4 more tomato plants that one of the guys at the fertilizer plant had given me. Sundays will most likely become my garden day because I would prefer not to be around CFC when its open for business. Go figure.

It dawned on me that I stay out of work until my benefits run out, I will get to bow hunt every day!

The response from some of the people I used to work with has been wonderful & humbling. It feels awfully nice nice to know that I made such an impact on folks.

For the love of horses, it's been raining since Saturday! Today was supposed to be the "transition" day back to sunshine, but the forecast calls for 80% chance of rain! Transition to the ark it seems.

My garden is *very* wet; a few onion have been washed right out of their homes. I think one squash plant must be washed out to sea.

Brian is due home from NH tonight. No word from him, but it sounds like both guys skunked this year by the turkeys.

Tucker has done a great job of keeping me company though.

Bappy Hirthday to [livejournal.com profile] dreamtigress !!

Seems that I have posted some blather about a garden but not the real story.  CFC is hosting a community garden for the first time & I have been part of the project since the beginning.  It has been great to see things come together.  We have 26.5 garden plots for our first year.

There was supposed to be 27, but since the ground that was plowed was not a perfect rectangle; there was this sort of triangle part leftover.  To keep it from being an eye-sore, I agreed to take over.  It's been dubbed "The Devil's Trangle" & I will try my hand at growing some stuff this season.

We've had rain for a few days now & when I came in yesterday morning, part of my garden was underwater!  Since the work day was nuts & I had a lunch date, it was not until after work that I could get out to save my little patch of garden.  Some of my squash were underwater so I used my hoe & tried to create some drainage ditches.

Of course, as I am hacking away out there, who comes along but our GM.

"Making some drainage ditches, are we?"

OY!

Awwww

I'm a mommy!

My first onions plants are poking through!

HAHA  - what the heck were you thinking?

Today - in the rain - I planted baby yellow squash & rutabaga plants.  Now to work on some tomatoes & mulch.

The ex leaves on his annual New Hampshire trek tomorrow morning.

We have onions!  I finished working the dirt a bit in my garden plot & planted a row of yellow onions.

The weather was a big tease ... it was only 34 degrees when I left this morning, but by lunch time it was in the 80's!  Of course, every one asks me where it is the bike.

I've been spending a lot of time improving my company's website ... sure hope it pays off.
