Trying something new...
November 14th, 2006 08:16 pmBrian's last day off from work for muzzleloader hunting. We decided on an afternoon hunt at the Phelps Wildlife Management Area that is not far from our house. The weather is absolutely stunning for mid-November; I love hunting on a day like today but Brian finds it to be a bit too warm.
After gathering up all of our gear, we set off down the access road. Brian would like to get us close to the gas line that the WMA butts up to. We chit-chatted as we walked & looked for deer sign. We spotted several trails & tracks, although none of the tracks appear to be fresh. We even saw some mule tracks.
Working our way into the dense woods, we aim in the direction of the gas line. It is a very long walk through some very thick woods. The ground is way more wet than I had anticipated & I try to be very careful not to get my feet wet. Brian, as always, just slogs through.
We come across a fairly decent trail & Brian spots some movement in the distance. He sees deer, but it is too far for a shot. We change our course slightly to follow the trail & eventually come within sight of the gas line.
Setting up, we decide that we will stay together to hunt. I admit to being a bit nervous in these *new* woods. Not long after we settle in, I hear Brian's breathing get deeper & deeper & I know he is taking a little nap. He would later call his light snoring his 'grunt call' but he can't fool me!
Aside from two squirrels, I don't see much of anything else. As the sun sets, the temperature drop is quite noticeable & we pack up our gear. Stepping out onto to the gas line, we again look for deer sign. Brian spots two deer VERY far away through his binoculars & watches them for a bit.
We walk along the gas line, noting where the deer trails are & any other signs we can notice. Once we reach the road, we trek back to the parking area where the Dodge is waiting for us. Even though we are coming home empty-handed, it was a nice outing.
