Today's hunting news
January 20th, 2007 06:18 pmWhile the extended deer season is still in, today is very windy which does not make for good deer hunting conditions. We decided against driving all the way to Gainesville or Loudoun County to hunt where the wind was even stronger according to weather.com.
At my suggestion, we went squirrel hunting out back since I have been surrounded by squirrels every time I went hunting for deer. Brian planned on walking back to the spot where I have been set up the last few times while I would drive back & hunt from my chair & wait for him to reach me. He teased me by telling me that he would push a big buck to me. haha - Tall Man - very funny!
It didn't take long for the squirrels to come out after I got settled in. While I could hear them, I had a hard time finding them. Finally one came within shooting range & I got my .22 Marlin ready. As the squirrel jumped on a stump, I shot & missed. The squirrel jumped off the stump but stayed at the base of a nearby tree. I wasn't able to get another shot off ... the scope I have is fine for target shooting but I now know it is not at all suited for hunting.
After hearing a shot in the distance, I checked in with Brian who informed me that he had gotten a squirrel & was still on his way to me. In due time, I would shoot at another squirrel & miss it as well. Again, I could hear the squirrels scurrying on the ground but had a hard time locating them. It seemed that the windy conditions made them move about much more quickly than normal.
Finally I was so cold that I packed up, went back to the truck & called Brian on the walkie-talkie. He had decided to make his way back to the house with his one squirrel & told me to meet him there. With the heat on full blast, I drove around to the house where Brian met me in the garage. I could tell something was up ...
Seems he had put his hunting belt with pouches down while he went in the house & Cooper stole the belt. By the time Brian recovered the belt, the squirrel, which had been in one of the pouches, was gone. Cooper stole Brian's squirrel. hehe
