The weather was perfect yesterday for our first anniversary party & we were so lucky to have so many of our good friends & family make the journey to be with us. As always with a large party, it is hard to spend enough time with everyone, but I tried my best.
Auntie Anne & Uncle Joe drove down from NJ to spend the day with us & aside from my Mom, they were the only part of my family that made it. Health issues & busy schedules kept the rest of the family from attending. (
dreamtigress, of course, gets a special "get-out-of-party" pass since she works the MD Ren Faire on weekends.)
Auntie Anne reminded me of a conversation that she & I had about 3 years ago when we were driving up north ... about how Brian & I would get married when the time was right & not to worry about how long we had been dating or "living in sin" or any of that. OK, no laughing about the whole living in sin part. ~ LOL ~
Mom, as always, was the biggest help ever. From picking up the wedding cake (& countless other items) to set-up to clean up she was such an amazing help. I'm afraid we wore her out because she's not feeling so hot today. We could not have done it with her. Thank you, Mom!
Lots of Brian's family was able to make it, although a lot of them run on "Robertson Time" ... even the ones that aren't Robertsons run on it too! It was very nice to see Donnie & Ti again, we do not see them often enough. Donny is the uncle who created our master bathroom. David, Milinda & their 3 boys came. The littlest nephew is getting so big! We had good laughs with him later in the day when he put his shirt on backwards & I teased him that it was his head on backwards instead. Eddie did the grilling, which is always a big help. Even Brian's sister, Shannon came with her son. While she wasn't overly chummy with us, just her coming by is a big step for both she & Brian.
Jack & Fran brought a huge basket of tomatoes to share with everyone ... the running joke is that we forgot to send folks home with them so now Brian & I have a gazillion tomatoes. Uncle Lavern (yes, uncle) brought his 'famous' potato salad & Aunt Puddin' (don't ask, it must be a southern thing) brought a very interesting creation of cheese & other tidbits stuck into a head of cabbage with colored toothpicks. (Mental image = porcupine on acid?)
The only bit of Robertson family drama that I know of came in the form of Brian's second cousin, Dylan. Dylan is a 6 or 7 year old terror. He wasn't here two minutes when my Uncle Joe saw him try to kick Cooper. Good thing I had not seen him or the boy would have had his own foot up his arse.
One of the highlights of the day was getting two graphic designers (Geff & Cheryl Lynn) that I used to work with at GMA back together again after 7 years. What a reunion! Also turns out that Cheryl Lynn knows a lot of the same folks as
1painter42!
1painter42 & her husband gave us our very own bocce set & we broke it in right with not one, but two, authentic old Italian men. Geff's wife, Michelle, deserves some sort of prize for bringing the only covered dish (macaroni & cheese) that was enjoyed in its entirety so that we did not have to make room in fridge for it!
Our neighbors, Gary & Norma came to the party & even went home for tables & chairs when we realized we could use more. Ron & Ann Yankey also came to visit; I worked with Ron at AKA. Another bit of kismet ... Ron used to race cars, so he knows
1painter42's husband. Annie Mundy, a old motorcycle buddy of mine was able to come for a bit before her next stop at another party.
I know I have not mentioned everyone, but my memory is akin to a colander, especially after the hustle bustle of the past week or so. We truly had such a wonderful day.
Brian survived the cake cutting. Almost everyone was able to crowd into the house while we cut the cake. Brian & I kept the cake feeding thing very civil. After we were done I tried to dab some icing on his nose for a 'Kodak moment' but all Brian had to do was lift his head to keep his nose out of reach. The carrot cake was VERY yummy, very moist with black walnuts & coconut. The icing was a bit too sweet, but that is an easy thing to 'fix' & it's not like I plan on having another wedding cake. =)
The biggest surprise by far came when everyone but Mom had left. A truck pulled in the yard & I thought it was someone who had forgotten something coming back to retrieve it. Turns out, our friends from NJ, Art & Kathleen, drove all the way down to surprise us. Mission accomplished! Kathleen even managed to sneak into the kitchen & surprise Mom. What an awesome present their coming down was!
Thanks again to everyone who came & to those who sent happy thoughts our way!
