Opening Day
October 4th, 2008 08:18 pmWhat a stellar October day! What an awesome day to be in the woods! This morning we went hunting at Bob Butler's place in Culpeper County. He's got 100 acres by Mount Pony & no one hunts it for bow. We've not done as much scouting as we would have liked, but know where there several deer trails run.
Brian ended up in a tree stand, bumping a deer on his way to it. He heard some turkey, but that was about it. Apparently I sat on the wrong side of my tree, because two deer came in from behind me! The first one came in, snorted & stamped at me, but hung around. I was hoping it would come 'round into my line of sight, but no such luck. It stayed behind me for quite some time, settling down to nibble acorns, then snorting again. A bit later, another deer came in from behind & snuck up along my side but out of shooting range.
Even though Brian stayed home, I went out again in the afternoon behind the house. As I walked into the woods, I saw a lot deer sign, some of it very fresh, so I was hopeful that I would see something. While did I see something (squirrels & birds) not a single deer was to be seen.
My new scent-lock pants are AWESOME! They are quiet, warm & the side pocket on the leg is perfect to hold my cocking device & stuff.
Not shooting at any deer also meant I got practice discharging the crossbow with a bolt into the ground. LOL
Still a great day to be in the woods.
