pandasheart: (whistlejacket)
After a very long season of hunting whitetails & coming home empty-handed, I finally bagged a deer on the second to last day of the extended season.

With my crossbow!!!

Hunting at a co-worker's farm, a small button buck walked to within 8 feet of me, turned around & walked off ... only to come through the tree line where I was waiting for him with my bow ready. He only had to take a few steps beyond the tree for me to have a clear shot & he did just that. I squeezed the trigger & hit the buck in the kill zone. Adrenaline took him about 20-25 yards before he buckled.

The mechanical broadhead worked perfectly - shattering the top of his shoulder blade, decimating his lungs & exited through his rib cage where you could see the perfect slice of the 3-blade tip.

My first deer in a long time & my first bow kill!

Sadly though once we got the buck home we saw that he had patches of missing fur & very little muscle tone over his back. His body hair pulled out very easily. While he did not appear to have wasting disease or other "obvious" symptoms, we chose to discard the carcass & not take any chances.

I am fairly certain that this must be the deer I saw earlier earlier in the week scratching a lot.

While I am really bummed about not contributing to our freezer, once again, I have taken an animal out of the herd that should have been culled.
