Once upon a time...
January 27th, 2011 08:09 pmAfter an evening of brownouts, the power finally went out here around 10 pm last night. Thankfully I already had a fire going in the woodstove so I knew the house would stay marginally warm enough.
No electricity here means no water (the house in on a well) as well as no CPAP to sleep with. I guess I have not really appreciated just how much the CPAP improves my sleep until I had to do without it last night. I woke up several times during the course of the night and finally gave up just after 7 am. Since it was a bit chilly, I figured that I would take care of the dogs, stoke the stove and then curl up on the couch for a bit.
As I was getting ready to go out with the dogs, I saw that the sunrise was just stunning and I went back to fetch my phone. Fortunately I also remembered to put socks on. Then it dawned on me to take some video of the dogs playing in the snow for
daecabhir so that he could enjoy the show. Out the door the three of us and I remembered to close both doors behind me to try to keep as much heat in the house as possible.
The dogs went charging in the snow while I took some pictures of the sunrise, then I shot some video of the dogs playing. Back in the house for breakfast. Uh oh! The door is locked. I have no keys. I have no access to the spare key. I am screwed. After trying to gain access through the garage door, I called
daecabhir and explained my plight to him. We decided that calling the police might be the best option to try first since no one who actually has a spare key to the house is currently close enough to help and a locksmith might not be able to respond due to the weather situation.
Eventually a county sheriff showed up and surprised me with his choice of implement to gain entry into the house ... a card from his own wallet. Depending on you look at things, the new locks on the house are MUCH more secure then the old ones and they were not going to budge.
After a bit of debate over the best course of action, I gave him permission to break a window. Since I had now spent an hour in the freezing cold I was ready to give up and just wanted back inside where it was warm.
So now there is a window that needs replacing and I am feeling puny but at least I did not freeze to death.
Oh yes, and
daecabhir says that I _will_ be taking my keys with me every time that I leave the house no matter what.
He's a smart man. I think I will keep him.
