pandasheart: Panda's Heart (huh?)
The first and only time that we have purchased faire food this year and I end up in the hospital! [livejournal.com profile] daecabhir and I were having a hungry sort of day. The weather at faire was cool and by 4 pm on Sunday, we were hungry. Being the awesome man that he is, he went out to get us food. Falafel for him, a cooked-fresh pork chop for me. By the time he go back, I was really hungry and ate my chop quickly. There was a small area that wasn't cooked enough and I ate around it. By 5:30, my tummy was unhappy, but I attributed that to my having eaten too fast. By 6 pm, I was feeling nauseous and headed for the privie. Fortunately, we have our own private priv, so it's nearly as bad as going to the public ones. I spare you, gentle reader, from the gory details, but for the next hour, I spent a LOT of time in that private priv.

Daecabhir and Mr. Tessem watched out for me as well did all the booth stuff to get us closed. By now, it was getting dark, cold, and I was feeling pretty sick. (A brief respite after loosing my tummy contents was all too brief.) Word had spread about me being sick and August came to check on me and made many trips to Dreamtigeress' booth to fetch me things. Because of my last experience with food poisoning, it was not hard to make the call to go to the emergency room. Terry drove Daecabhir to the Prius while Dreamtigress and August stayed with me. They kept me warm and safe and pumped me with good juju.

It took a good while for Daecabhir to get back to the booth to fetch me, but when he arrived, everyone got me packed in (along with my 'just in case' bucket' and trusty ginger ale). While he and Terry had gone out to the parking lot, they called Judy to let her know what was going on and she started sending me some good juju too. (It was amazing!) The ER staff at Anne Arundel Medical Center, got me processed quickly and I was hooked up (literally) within an hour. Since we came straight from faire, Daecabhir and I were still in garb - making us the freaks in the ER. We spent a lot of time talking about faire to the nursing staff and one nurse, in particular, couldn't get over Daecabhir's Catskill moccasin boots.

Fast forward to being put into an ER room, a CT scan which showed, that despite the violent manner in which food had left my system, there was still food in my stomach, persistent nausea, a worried-looking Daecabhir, and the worst part - esophageal spasms. These apparently feel like a heart attack (and so they do an EKG just to rule that out). They also tried to feed me a lidocaine gel (to quell the spasms) which was nasty and made me retch. (I would later tell one of the ER docs when he asked what it was that the nurse tried to kill me with it.) After a hefty dose of dilaudid, more anti-nausea meds, and a dose of reglan (speeds tummy motility), things calmed down a bit and I was admitted for observation. A very tired Daecabhir left the ER around 1 am to get some shut-eye at Renniesylum.

After a night of fitful sleep (no CPAP) and a lot of nurse visits, I was served breakfast. This breakfast consisted of coffee, orange juice, turkey sausage on a biscuit, and cereal (with HFCS). I told the nurse that eating what was on that tray would send me to the ER on a good day. Fortunately, she was able to score some decaf tea and a yogurt for me to try. The rest of the morning was spent dosing off and on until I was informed that if I could keep a liquid/low acid lunch down than I could go home. YAY! Image my surprise when tomato soup showed up. Really? Once again, the nice nurse found some chicken noodle soup. Lunch was consumed with success, Daecabhir arrived at the hospital, and discharge papers were in the works.

Funny side note: In passing along the information about my being ill, one friend was trying to be discreet when telling another friend about what had made me sick; so there was a lot of whispering and gesticulation. And that, gentle reader, is how 'bad pork chop' became 'bad blow job'!
