HBC = hit by car.

Brian & I had just sat down to dinner when we heard a knock at the front door. Usually no one knocks on our door unless they are lost. Since Brian was in his underwear (at least he had that much on!) I went outside to see what was up. There stood a guy in a lime-green safety jacket holding Cricket. He told me that he had seen her on the road & that it looked like she had been hit. I thanked him & rushed her into the house.

She'd been hit indeed ... pupils were constricted & slightly uneven. A chunk of flesh missing from the inside of one of her front legs. Some blood coming from her nose, but not too bad. Unresponsive. Then she started seizuring. Brian called the local vet only to find that we'd have to drive to the Fredericksburg emergency clinic. After a quick phone call to them, we had to face the realization of the cost involved with taking her there.

We decided to give her some time ... she seizured on & off for an hour or so. We debated on putting her down ourselves (don't ask) but I just couldn't be sure it was the right choice. Once the seizures stopped, she started coming around a bit, not quite coherent though. We fixed her up the best we could & tried to get some rest.

By morning, her breathing had settled down quite a bit & it looked as though she was able to rest some. She picked her head up when I called her - a good sign. She is spending the day with my mother since I had to come to work. While I hate to burden Mom with something like this, she is very good at this sort of thing. We've agreed to keep an eye on her & after talking with her vet, we feel pretty good about our decisions so far.
