It's a bird...
July 6th, 2006 02:41 pmThis morning as I was pulling onto the road that the plant is on, I saw what looked liked a wild turkey on the side of the road. After swinging around & parking, I got out & walked over to what was, indeed, a young wild turkey. I'm not sure if it was a male or a female, but it was a good-sized juvenile with down-like feathers on its neck still.
While it did not seem to be hurt, it also did not seem to want to move. I stroked the back of its neck & wings lightly as I contemplated exactly what to do with it. Putting it in the back of the Endeavor was not an option; the amount of mess that could be wrought in a few minutes was great.
Finally, I choose to get the young turkey off the road's edge. Prodding it to get up & move about, I watched carefully for signs of injury. Other than 2 wing feathers a bit of place, nothing seemed wrong with my new feathered friend. Once it settled back down in the wet grass, I headed to the plant.
After retrieving the biggest box I could find from the warehouse (the warehouse guys asked if they should start warming up the oven), I headed back to the turkey. Arriving at the intersection, I was alarmed to see the turkey setting on the shoulder of the big road even closer to traffic than before.
After a little mishap of pulling into a ditch, I jumped out of the truck & approached the turkey. Although I was able to touch it before, it was not letting me do so any longer. I shooed it all the way into the woods & headed back to work. Checking on the area at lunch showed no sign turkey signs, so I hope it has gone some place safe.
