Be very qwiet ... I'm hunting wabbits!
A co-worker with access to 600 acres invited us to go rabbit hunting today! Cooper, Brian & I met Mario & his young son, Marco, early in the morning to head out & beat the bushes. Brian & I drove there in separate vehicles since Brian was supposed to go to work due to impending snow (thankfully, he did not have to go in).
Mario's father owns 300 acres of nice rolling land with lots of woods. In addition to this land, Mario gained permission to rabbit hunt the 300 acres next door. What a nice chunk of land to hunt! With some snow still on the ground & temperatures still cold enough to keep things from being muddy, we hunted all morning. We all got a nice little workout walking to each spot that might contain a rabbit.
When we got to the neighbor's corn field, I went ahead of the guys so I could rest a bit as my back was starting to hurt. Mario shot twice at the same rabbit, but did missed it (Brian would later tell me it had been wounded). While waiting on the guys to get to me, I saw three big-bodied deer go by in a nearby bottom. I am really hoping we can expand out hunting here to things bigger than bunnies!
I had to sit out the last drive since my back was hurting something fierce & I had forgotten to bring anything to take for it. I had just about gotten to the truck when I heard 2 shots. It took a while but when the guys got back to the truck I learned it was the 8 year old who had bagged the bunny! How awesome that the boy gets a rabbit on his first bunny hunt! To make it sweeter, it was one his dad missed on the first shot! LOL
While Cooper didn't run any rabbits, he did well int he field & was well behaved; keeping us in sight, listening to our calls, etc. Brian commented that he was a bit gun shy, which is surprising on one hand since we shoot here at the house ... however, Brian has not worked the dog much, so I guess it makes sense.
Mario sent us home with a dozen fresh eggs from his chickens & the hope of doing some spring turkey hunting.
