Today is the day we finally got the new dining room furniture off the trailer, into the house & set up. We already knew that we had at least one damaged chair, sloppy staining & who knows what else.

Upon unpacking the first box of two chairs, Brian pointed out that the wood used is laminated & not single-piece construction. We had been told the furniture was solid wood & assumed that meant single-piece construction. Technically, laminated wood is solid wood, but still. Also in the first box, we discovered MANY places with sloppy staining, the under side of rails not stained at all, rub marks in the stain down to the bare wood, a gouge & planer marks. The most surprising discovery was that on the chair backs they do some all wood joint thing that is common with mission-style furniture. This would have been a nice surprise, however, these particular chairs have square pegs in rounds holes.

No lie.

We looked at the pictures of the furniture set online & were not able to zoom in to that level of detail, but it is certainly something I will be asking our saleslady about. She was off today because I already called the store. In fact, I also learned that the entire customer service department is off both Sundays & Mondays. And, no, it seems a "regular" manager could not help me, nor did the person who answered the phone seem willing to connect me with one.

After a LOT of debate of what to do about the furniture & looking online for complaints about Ashley, Brian called the store & asked to speak with a manager. After insisting a bit, he chatted with Terry who informed that we should go ahead & set the furniture up & that they will send a technician out to fix the furniture.

This means we could finally get in motion putting things together. Of course, we had a whole of old furniture & stuff to deal with at the same time as putting the new stuff in, so it was a bit of a ballet. Brian got two chairs put together completely & they are really comfortable! Much to our relief the buffet doesn't seem to have anything wrong with it.

However ...

Much to our disbelief, the hutch is a refurbed unit!!! There is a sticker on the back about it being repaired! The note refers to a door issue (we could not find anything wrong) & a split top (which we found easily since their repair job was awful). Someone has a pretty huge set of balls selling used/refurbed/returned/damaged/whatever furniture as new! You can bet you booty we will have a field day on them!

With the hutch & buffet in place, it was to get the table in. Wow! Is it huge! We didn't find anything wrong with the table, other than some sloppy staining in the edges, but we will be giving it a good going over just in case.

With the hour getting late & us being two tired furniture movers, Brian & I sat down to have our first meal in our new dining room furniture. << insert "awww" here >> The menu was a spinach-artichoke lasagna served by candlelight. << insert another "awww" here >>
